Do Apples Need Refrigeration?

Do Apples Need Refrigeration?

Experts agree: the refrigerator is the best place to store apples, keeping them fresh up to 10 times longer than at room temperature. Apples thrive in cold, humid conditions—ideally around 33-38°F with 90-95% humidity.

Store them in the crisper drawer, away from other produce, and consider using a moist paper towel to reduce shriveling. Avoid storing apples with ethylene-producing fruits like bananas or potatoes, which can speed spoilage.

At room temperature, apples last 5-7 days before degrading in quality. For maximum freshness, don’t leave them out for long. Refrigeration can extend their lifespan from three weeks to three months or more.

Storage Tips:

  • Keep apples in the crisper drawer with high humidity.
  • Don’t wash apples until ready to eat.
  • Remove any bruised or spoiled apples immediately.
  • Keep apples away from strong odors.
