Spring Awakens at Sunrise Orchards: Blossoms, Bees, and New Beginnings🌸🐝

At Sunrise Orchards, the growing season begins long before the first blossoms appear. From December through April, each tree is carefully pruned by hand—a detailed and time-intensive process that helps ensure a healthy and productive crop. Alongside this work, up to 10,000 new dwarf apple trees are planted each year. These trees are designed to grow efficiently and can begin producing fruit in as little as two years.

As spring unfolds, the orchard begins its transformation. Buds swell on the branches, and with the arrival of warmer weather, blossoms start to open. Apple blossoms typically appear from late April through the first two weeks of May, though the exact timing always depends on the weather.

These blossoms are more than a sign of spring—they are the foundation of the apple crop. Each cluster contains several flowers, including the “king blossom” at the center, which opens first and often produces the largest fruit. For apples to develop, these blossoms must be cross-pollinated.

That’s where the bees come in. Each spring, honey bees are brought into the orchard to carry pollen from flower to flower. Drawn by the blossoms’ sweet scent, they play a crucial role in fertilizing the seeds that allow fruit to grow. Without them, there would be no apples.

Throughout the season, our team continues to care for the orchard by training young trees along trellises, maintaining the orchard floor, monitoring insect activity, and irrigating when needed. Every step is taken to support healthy growth and a successful harvest.

Although Sunrise Orchards remains closed to the public until August, blossom season is a special time to visit from a distance. A drive past the orchard offers a stunning view of over 140,000 trees covered in delicate white and pink blooms, a fleeting but unforgettable sign of spring.

We’ll be sharing photos and updates on our Facebook page and blog as the blossoms reach their peak. As always, the timing is up to Mother Nature—but we look forward to sharing the beauty of the season with you.

From our family to yours, thank you for being part of Sunrise Orchards. 🌸🐝
