Why Gays Mills Is Such a Great Place to Grow Apples 🍎
Southwestern Wisconsin, near Gays Mills, lies within the beautiful Driftless Area, a region known for its rolling hills, valleys and rugged terrain. These unique growing conditions make the area especially well suited for apple orchards.
At Sunrise Orchards, many of our trees are planted on elevated hillsides, providing abundant sunshine, excellent natural air circulation and good drainage. The elevation also allows cold air to move down and away from the orchard rather than settling around the trees.
Our well-drained soils help keep apple tree roots from staying overly wet, while the combination of warm summer days and cooler nights helps apples develop their distinctive flavor, color, sweetness and firmness.
The hills and valleys of the Driftless Area also create a variety of microclimates, allowing different apple varieties to thrive and ripen at different times throughout the season.
It's more than just a beautiful place to visit—the land itself helps make Gays Mills an exceptional place to grow apples. And at Sunrise Orchards, we're fortunate to have growing conditions that have helped our family grow apples here for generations. 🍎🌄
